Project Name: Origami House

Landscape Design/Build Contractor: Signature Landscape Contractors
Project Overview
Signature Landscape Contractors transformed the outdoor environment of the Origami House into a seamless extension of its architecture, blurring the line between structure and landscape. Inspired by the homeowner’s vision for a sophisticated modern retreat and the home’s bold architectural expression, the landscape was thoughtfully crafted to create a tranquil, immersive setting that feels far larger than the property’s compact footprint.
Located on the private peninsula of Twelve Oaks in Winter Park, FL, the Origami House was designed by OSA Studio and constructed alongside a sister property. Defined by a striking combination of slate and Corten steel, the residence presented a unique opportunity to craft an outdoor environment that complemented its architectural vision while maximizing the potential of its intimate site. Through thoughtful landscape and hardscape design, Signature Landscape Contractors created a serene yet powerful setting that enhances the home’s modern aesthetic, frames its architectural features, and fosters a strong connection between the built environment and the surrounding landscape.
Design Vision
The Origami House’s bold geometric design inspired a landscape that feels sculptural yet serene. Working within the compact site, the design sought to create a sense of openness and visual continuity, allowing architecture, landscape, and nature to read as a single composition.
A mature specimen oak became the organizing element of the front garden, anchoring the landscape while establishing an immediate connection to the site. Layers of meadow-inspired plantings introduce softness, movement, and seasonal interest, providing contrast to the home’s crisp architectural forms.
Throughout the property, carefully framed views, clean lines, and thoughtfully composed planting areas reinforce the home’s geometric character. A restrained palette of materials paired with naturalistic plantings creates a sense of calm, depth, and cohesion, allowing each outdoor space to feel purposeful and immersive.
The result is a landscape that celebrates the architecture’s distinctive geometry while creating a timeless outdoor environment rooted in simplicity, balance, and a strong sense of place.
Scope of Work
Signature Landscape Contractors executed a comprehensive landscape and hardscape plan, including:
- Landscape Design: Installation of a large character specimen oak as the centerpiece, surrounded by a curated selection of ornamental grasses
- The grasses were chosen for their texture, movement, and ability to thrive in Florida’s coastal climate, creating a low-maintenance yet visually captivating environment
- Hardscape Integration: Strategic placement of hardscape elements to enhance functionality and aesthetics, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings
- This included pathways and gathering spaces designed to complement the home’s slate and Corten steel materials.
- Site Optimization: Thoughtful grading and planting to maximize the perception of space on the small lot, ensuring the landscape felt expansive and open while maintaining privacy.
Challenges and Solutions
The primary challenge was the lot’s small footprint, which required innovative design to achieve the clients’ vision of an open, prairie-like aesthetic. Signature Landscape Contractors addressed this by:
- Using low-profile, free-form grasses to create depth and movement without overwhelming the space.
- Positioning the specimen oak to anchor the design, drawing the eye upward and outward to enhance the sense of scale.
- Incorporating minimalist hardscape features that mirrored the home’s architectural style, ensuring a cohesive look without cluttering the lot.
Outcome
The completed landscape and hardscape transformed the property into a serene, visually striking sanctuary that perfectly complements its architectural elegance. Thoughtfully designed on a compact lot, the landscape creates an open and expansive atmosphere while preserving one of the homeowners’ most cherished features of the property—its extraordinary privacy. Carefully tucked away from public view, the residence remains discreet from the street, yet once visitors step through the entrance, the landscape unfolds into a lush, welcoming oasis. This seamless transition from privacy to openness creates a truly unique sense of arrival and reinforces the home’s connection to its natural surroundings.
Conclusion
The result is a timeless outdoor environment that balances beauty, functionality, and seclusion, creating a peaceful retreat that the homeowners enjoy every day.
The Origami House project showcases Signature Landscape Contractors’ ability to blend creativity, technical expertise, and environmental sensitivity to deliver exceptional results. By harmonizing the natural beauty of Winter Park with the bold design of the Origami House, we created a landscape that not only elevates the property but also reflects the clients’ vision of a modern, nature-inspired retreat.
